Our Bridge Damaged By Satnavs
However, it puts the entire blame on satellite navigations for redirecting the HGV drivers via Bawburgh village from the southern bypass that runs nearby. They allege that the sat-navs, seeking an alternative route owing to a suspected accident on the A47 bypass, have been directing the drivers through Bawburgh, despite the reality that a weight restriction prevails on the bridge. The members of the parish council, after a meeting being held last week to decide on the matter, seems to have pledged to look seriously into the problem.
June Tucker, the Bawbergh parish clerk said that recently a 40 ton orange lorry damaged the parapet of the bridge by getting wedged on it, and English Heritage was looking into the matter. She added that even though there were weight restriction signs beside the bridge, a foreign driver armed with a foreign satnav was unlikely to notice them. She also said that it was in these circumstances the parish council meeting decided on the necessity of larger signs, especially from the direction of Harts Lane.
The parish council of Bawburgh has tasked June Tucker to contact the highways department of the county, and see whether the signs can be magnified.
