Driver blames sat-nav for hitting scooter

Ian Brown's Vauxhall Vectra collided with the scooter while attempting to make an illegal right turn at the junction with Carholme Road and Brayford Wharf North, Lincoln in November 2007.

Brown (59) of Bromyard, Herefordshire, blamed his sat-nav, Lincoln Magistrates' Court Heard yesterday.

Karl Robson (29), of Sudbrooke Drive, in Ermine, Lincoln, was thrown from his scooter, breaking his hand and cutting to his arms and legs.

Referring to a witness statement, Marie Stace, prosecuting, told the court that as the car began to turn, the driver of a nearby van beeped his horn to try and deter Brown from turning.

In a statement read out in court, the witness said that the scooter, which was coming from Newland, could not have stopped and the rider was not at fault.

Brown did not attend court because his father had fallen ill but pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without due care and attention by post.

In a statement sent to the court Brown said: “I came to the traffic lights and indicated right because the sat-nav indicated it.

“As I slowly crossed the road, someone pipped their horn and shook his fist at me and the next thing I remember is having a crash.

“Without the sat-nav I may not have made the manoeuvre and I was distracted by the man who shook his fist at me.”

Brown was fined £200 and his licence endorsed with five penalty points.

He was also ordered to pay £60 prosecution costs plus a £15 Government surcharge.
