999 Blunders

Almost 400 crew and paramedics have been ordered to use street guides and local knowledge following a series of delays across the UK.

One ambulance crew’s blind faith in its satnav turned a 20-minute transfer into a 400-mile round trip. Instead of being directed from east London to Brentwood, Essex, it was sent to the outskirts of Manchester.

And a 10-year-old crash victim was treated by a paramedic, but had to wait almost an hour for an ambulance that got lost to take her to hospital for checks.

That ambulance was operated by Tyneside-based North East Ambulance Service, whose boss Paul Liversidge has ordered staff to use old-fashioned methods.
