What is satellite navigation?
All automotive satellite navigation systems work on the same basic principles
The unit receive’s signals from strategically placed satellites placed in orbit around the Earth. Unlike other GPS systems these use position data to locate the user on the road in the units map database. Using the road database, the unit can give directions to other locations along roads also in the database
Points of interest will also be stored with their geographic coordinates. POIs such as filling stations, public parking and cash point machines are common to most units but the database is expanding daily.
There is no industry standard for satellite navigation maps . The map vendors Tele Atlas and NavTeq create the base map in a standard format and this is converted on to the CD-Rom in the navigation system
The road database is stored in the unit whereas more detailed information is downloaded from a CD or DVD via a computer or via the internet. It is this information that makes one unit better than the next.
Some newer systems can not only give precise driving directions, they can also receive and display information on traffic congestion and suggest alternative routes.
